Gas Leak Causes Evacuation Of Downtown Carroll Businesses Wednesday Night

Businesses within about a block-and-half radius of the 500 block of north Adams Street were evacuated Wednesday night. The Carroll Fire and Police Departments and Alliant Energy responded to a report of a gas leak at that location at approximately 7:24 p.m. Fire Chief, Greg Schreck, says the initial report was of the odor of gas near Anderson Shoes. Upon arrival, firefighters confirmed the strong odor and, as a safety precaution, ordered the evacuation of the businesses that were open at that time, Promesing Image Salon and Spa and J.C. Penney. They located the source at a bank of meters on the rooftop above Artworks Studio. Firefighters were able to shut off the gas flow, effectively eliminating the risk of fire or explosion. Authorities were on scene for approximately 45 minutes. No injuries were reported.
