It is Election Day and polls open(ed) early for Iowa voters, at 7 a.m., and will remain open late, until 9 p.m. Carroll County will be deciding the outcome of three contested races, three uncontested and on a referendum giving the county the authority to bond up to $8.95 million for the construction of a new jail. In the race for the District 12 Iowa House of Representatives’ seat, incumbent Brian Best is being challenged this year by Democrat, Peter Leo. The District Four Carroll County Supervisor’s position, currently held by Democrat, Marty Danzer, will also be decided by voters as he faces off against Republican, Stephanie Hausman. The final local contested race is Carroll County Recorder, with incumbent Democrat, Kathy Schwaller, up against Republican candidate, Ashten Wittrock. Carroll County Attorney, John Werden, District Two Supervisor, Dean Schettler, and Carroll County Treasurer, Jean Seidl, are all running unopposed. Auditor, Kourtney Irlbeck, says as of Monday morning, they had seen quite a few absentee ballots being cast.
Voters are reminded that there will be a soft-roll out of new voter laws this year. Registering to vote can be done at the polling location, however, a valid ID and proof of residency will be required. This includes a paper or electronic bill or check that includes your address. Proof of identity will need to be presented before voting. These include a valid Iowa driver’s license or a state or federally-issued ID or passport. This year, if proof of identity is not available, another resident can vouch for the voter and they can sign an oath of identity. If you requested an absentee ballot and did not return it, bring that with you to your polling location. A full list of Carroll County polling locations can be found with this story on our website. Carroll Broadcasting will bring you full local coverage on-air and online once results start coming in this evening.
