This coming Saturday, Glidden-area students, from nine to 14 years old, will be bring their eight weeks of research, design and programming to the 2018 First LEGO League “Into Orbit” qualifying challenge. They, along with children from more than 80 other countries, will show of their autonomous LEGO Mindstorms robots, that are designed with ideas to help improve space exploration. The six teams in the Iowa qualifying round at the Glidden-Ralston School will program their robots to solve a set of missions related to space exploration on an obstacle course. The teams are judged on robot design, Core Values of teamwork and good sportsmanship, and the overall project. The event is free and open to the public, with opening ceremonies starting at 8:40 a.m. and the awards ceremony closing out the day at 12:30 p.m. Qualifiers will work their way toward the state championships, to be held on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 19 and 20, at the Iowa State University College of Engineering.
