Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Superintendent, Dr. Kevin Lein, utilized two public meetings last week to engage with stakeholders and explain the district’s decision to update their vision and mission statements. The Board of Education voted on Nov. 26 to approve “A meaningful diploma for every student” as the district’s new vision statement. Lein says the vision of a meaningful diploma is not just a catchphrase; it is something they want to track and improve on every year.
Lein adds that diplomas should not just be a measure of how much a student knows when they graduate, but instead, it should be used as a metric to show they are capable of reaching their full potential. He used the rapid changes in technology over the last few decades to illustrate his point.
Lein told stakeholders the path to achieving their vision is through the mission statement, “Carroll Community School District students will be completely engaged every moment, in search of fully realizing potential of every skill necessary, for every possible future pursued.” To Lein, that means acknowledging that students learn at different rates and have natural talents in different fields, and the education system should be adjusted to account for that.
He is not suggesting they do away with traditional teaching styles all at once and says any changes would be implemented gradually over seven to 10 years. Lein notes this a process that would require the support of students, staff, families and the community to be successful and encourages anybody with questions to reach out.
