ATVs, UTVs and snowmobiles are now street legal in Sac City after officials approved an ordinance change that would allow them on the community’s roadways. According to Administrator, Jamie Lawrence, Sac City was the only town in Sac County that did not allow these types of vehicles. The change was formally adopted following its publication on Monday, but Lawrence says owners will have to take a few extra steps before taking them on the streets.
The third reading of the ordinance was approved Tuesday, Jan. 22 with no resistance from the public. While the city will enforce the ordinance through the Sac City Police Department, they will not be in charge of handling, licensing or inspections. Lawrence indicated that responsibility lays with the county and the state. He adds operators are also expected to know the rules regarding ATV/UTV usage on public streets.
Lawrence stresses that people should check with local officials before taking advantage of the ordinance change. City hall is open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. They can also be contacted by phone at 712-662-7593.
