Members of the Carroll City Council have been looking to the future over the last couple of months, holding budget workshops and discussing their work plan for Fiscal Year 2020 and beyond. At their most recent meeting, the discussion turned to fine tuning the latest draft of the upcoming year’s budget and LaVern Dirkx expressed some concern over one line item.
Carolyn Siemann says she went back through past information presented on signage at the entry points to Carroll. That project was started, but then put on hold after estimates starting coming in.
She says she understands the concern Dirkx expressed, but believes the sign needs to be replaced. Two members of the Airport Commission, Greg Siemann and Gene Vincent, made a point at being present after becoming aware this might be a topic of interest during the meeting. Greg Siemann says they too had sticker shock, but they are running a regional airport.
Council member, Clay Haley, says the commission does a good job of managing their money. However, he did have questions on whether or not they were looking to have a two-sided, lighted sign installed. Greg Siemann explained it likely that people landing at the airport know where they are. They are thinking more about those on the ground, people who may not be familiar with the area, and not just for right now, but into the future as well.
The goal is for a June installation. The council did not discuss the topic further, but did say they will be setting the public hearing for the budget at their next council meeting, potentially on March 11, just days prior to the required March 15 filing deadline.
