Authorities have charged a Halbur man for a first offense in operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated after locating an abandoned vehicle in the ditch Sunday night. At approximately 7 p.m. that evening, a Carroll County Sheriff’s Office deputy responded to a call into the communications center that there was a vehicle on its top in a field near Granite Avenue and 280th Street, south of Halbur. Upon arrival, the deputy found a 2007 Ford F-150 in the field on the east side of the blacktop. The driver was later identified as 60-year-old Kimly Troy Draves, and he told authorities he was northbound on Granite when he lost control. There was some frost and ice reported on area roadways at that time, but it was suspected that Draves had been consuming alcohol prior to the accident. After further investigation, it was determined that he was impaired and had a blood alcohol content level over the legal limit. No injuries were reported, but the truck was totaled with an estimated $15,000 in damage. In addition to the OWI charge, Draves was cited for failure to maintain control.
