Carroll County Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach and Sunnybrook Assisted Living are teaming up to offer area caregivers courses on caring for themselves when caring for their loved ones. The first class of Powerful Tools for Caregivers will be held on Thursday, Feb. 14 and will consist of six weeks of 90-minutes sessions. Human Sciences Program Coordinator, Anjanette Treadway, and Human Sciences Specialist, Dr. David Brown, will be leading the courses. Treadway says they hope to show caregivers the importance of maintaining their own health.
The class will be hosted weekly at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Carroll from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Preregistration is required to participate, and attendees are asked to donate a small amount to the program. Treadway says this donation is not required and will not exclude anybody from benefitting from the class.
Treadway and Brown will not just be teaching about caring for yourself. Sunnybrook will have a nurse on hand at the meetings to perform quick checkups for individuals who have signed up.
According to Treadway, Powerful Tools for Caregivers has been tested and evaluated through a grant from the U.S. Administration on Aging. For more information or to register, contact the Carroll County Extension and Outreach Office at 792-2364.
