Eleven Carroll teams brought home high scores from the Iowa High School Speech Association (IHSSA) state contest over the weekend. Fifteen groups traveled to Spencer on Saturday, and five teams from Kuemper Catholic High School and six teams from Carroll High School were awarded a “I”, or excellent rating. The Kuemper teams earned these accolades in four categories, including: One Act Play, Readers Theatre, Radio News and two Group Mime teams. From Carroll High School, groups were awarded top scores in four competitions, including: Group Mime, Readers Theatre and two teams from both Ensemble Acting and Group Improvisation. Carroll’s speech teams are coached by Bill Polking and Sonya Walsh and Kuemper’s by Deb Gute and Susan Glass. Carroll’s Ensemble Acting performance of “Grief is the Thing with Feathers” and Group Mime of “How the West was Won” were nominated to perform at All-State in Ames on Saturday Feb. 16.
