At a Thursday morning campaign stop at Kerp’s Tavern, Carroll County Democratic Party Chair, Peter Leo, introduced one of the many 2020 Presidential candidates. Leo says this man’s oldest son is named Ulysses, and likened him to a Greek God, sent just in time to save the people of America.
Saying that was one of the best introductions he has ever had, O’Rourke welcomed the Carroll-area residents, saying the Democratic Party used to be the party of rural America—those who feed and clothe the world. In the wake of devastating flooding, O’Rourke says what the rural areas of our country need most right now is a partner, not a handout.
He told those gathered he has seen much of rural Texas, being from El Paso, and he is right next door to our nation’s border. He says he is on the front lines of the immigration crisis and wants our country to become a democracy that is inclusive of everyone.
He adds he is not necessarily saying he is for open borders, but rather supports immigration reform. He proposes a plan to invest in ports of entry instead of walls. And he asserts that we will be safer if we know who is coming into our country. If they have committed crimes, deport them back to their country of origin. If they are contributing members of American society, then he wants to offer them a future here. O’Rourke stopped in Carroll during his campaign swing through western and central Iowa. He is a former Texas congressman and narrowly lost a bid for Republican Ted Cruz’s senate seat in the last election.
