Measles Case Confirmed In Iowa For First Time Since 2011

The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced today (Monday) a northeastern Iowa patient has been diagnosed with the measles virus. The State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa confirmed the infection through testing over the weekend. It is the first case reported in the state since 2011. According to public health officials, the individual is unvaccinated and recently returned from Israel, where a measles outbreak is occurring. The department says they are following up with people the patient may have come in contact with and ensuring they have received the Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine. Symptoms of measles infection include: red, watery eyes; high fever; cough; runny nose; and a distinctive rash. The department indicates there is no threat to the public but adds this serves as a strong reminder for all Iowans to ensure their vaccines are up-to-date.
