Celebrate School Board Superheroes During The Month Of May

May is School Board Recognition Month and the Iowa Association of School Boards (IASB) is inviting communities to thank their local volunteers. This year’s theme is “Superheroes for Public Education,” and pays tribute to the work they do and the significant impact they have on Iowa’s public education. The Carroll Community School District is celebrating their panel of superheroes: Board President, Jen Munson; Jon Sampson; Duane Horsley; Brad Jorgensen; newly appointed member, Karen Friedlein; and her predecessor, Gina Badding. Interim Superintendent, Marty Fonley says these members spend a significant amount of their time dedicated to the district, at no pay. They are tasked with governing through budget oversight, policy development and a focus and commitment on student achievement. “Our school board keeps the district moving forward,” Fonley says. “They serve 1,700 students and 300 employees and are responsible for an annual budget of $28 million. It’s a big job for no pay, but our board members say they serve to meet the needs of our students and our community.”
