If you have been traveling near the intersection of 5th and Court Streets in Carroll lately, you may have noticed something is missing—the front of the Farner Government Building. As contractors continue to work on the renovation for the new Carroll Public Library, they removed not only the front center portion of the lower level, but also the concrete slabs that had previously enclosed the second story. This, according to City Manager, Mike Pogge-Weaver, is another step forward in the addition of the two-story, glass-encased entrance and stairway to the library. He led a tour recently that highlighted how much progress has been made on the interior, and now on the exterior, of the building.
Some change orders have delayed work slightly on the west side of the building that will house the adult section, but Pogge-Weaver says it will catch up quickly with the work being done on the east end. He adds that even though they are anticipating some additional change orders, they believe the majority of those unknowns have been uncovered.
There are many features that have been incorporated to cater to the area’s young readers, supporting a foundation of lifelong learning for this segment of their consumer base.
Pogge-Weaver adds that they are realistically about eight months out before they will be hosting any kind of celebration in the new space. Photos of the work to date, those taken on the tour and others supplied by Pogge-Weaver can be found below. Simply click through twice on any image to bring it up full-size.
