Former Kuemper Theology Teacher Accused Of Sexual Misconduct Granted A Deferred Judgment

A former Kuemper theology instructor accused of sexual misconduct with a student has been sentenced in District Court for Carroll County. The order against 24-year-old Shawn William Vaske was handed down Thursday. Court records indicate he was originally charged with four counts of sexual exploitation by a school employee, an aggravated misdemeanor. An order filed last month clarified those charges, which previously listed them as class D felonies. An investigation by the Carroll Police Department in December found Vaske had maintained a sexual relationship with an 18-year-old female student during the 2017-18 school year. As part of a plea deal with prosecutors, three of the counts were dismissed, and Vaske was granted a deferred judgement, meaning court records regarding the case will be expunged upon the completion of his two-year probation. He is also required to pay more than $1,000 in fines, surcharges and court costs and must register with the Iowa Department of Public Safety Sex Offender Registry for at least 10 years.
