Summer Meals Program Provides Nutritious Meals To All Area Kids, Free Of Charge

Six years ago, the summer meals program came to Carroll as a way to provide breakfast and lunches to kids zero to 18 at no charge. Food Services Director for Carroll Community School District, Sara Anderson, says there is a need for area children to have nutritious meals once school lets out for the summer.

In an effort to keep the program non-discriminatory, it is open to all children.

The Carroll Community School District averages between 50 to 85 breakfasts per day and serves from 250 to 350 lunches. According to Anderson, however, the district normally serves around 2,000 meals per day during the school year.

There are no restrictions on where students can get the meals. They are available here in Carroll through both the public school and at Kuemper and in Arcadia. Anderson says there are several rules they must follow and money donated and raised by various organizations is used to help supplement the guidelines. One of the rules is that they cannot serve a dessert in the summer.

Private donations can be used to cover the cost of those items. The Adams and Kuemper locations will start serving on Wednesday, June 5. Times will be posted on the Summer Meals Program Carroll Iowa Facebook page, a link to which can be found below. Parents are also invited to join their children at a cost of $2 for breakfast and $4 for lunch. This coming Thursday, May 30, the Carroll County Cattlemen’s Association will be hosting a cookout with a portion of the proceeds going to the program. They will be serving hamburger and steak sandwich meals for a minimum $5 donation at the Graham Park Shelter House from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
