The Carroll County Sheriff’s Office has opened an investigation into the potential identity theft of an Illinois man. Last week, 63-year-old Mitchell C. Berk of Highland Park contacted authorities after he was notified by an online credit company that his identity may have been stolen. Berk’s name, date of birth, occupation and Social Security number were used to purchase a $16,000 Chevrolet Malibu at Spangler’s Automotive in Glidden, with a loan through Dupaco Credit Union. The vehicle was then transported to Chicago, Ill. Berk says he neither purchased nor received a vehicle, and authorities were unable to make contact with a possible suspect through any numbers provided on the loan application.
