The Iowa Department of Natural Resources, state, federal and local law enforcement will be on the lookout for impaired boat operators during the Operation Dry Water campaign from July 4 through July 7. Waterways will be heavily patrolled during the enforcement action in the hopes of decreasing the number of crashes causing injuries and death and to remove any impaired boat operators, thus providing a safe and enjoyable experience for boaters this season. “The effects of alcohol can be intensified when combined with wind and wave action and extended time spent in the sun,” says Susan Stocker, boating law administrator and education coordinator for the Iowa DNR. “Operators may not think they are under the influence, but their judgment, reaction time, balance and vision indicate that they are.” Tips for staying safe on the water this season include boating sober, wearing a life jacket and participating in a boating safety education course. Operating a vessel under the influence of alcohol or drugs is illegal on all navigable waters of the State and can lead to serious injuries and consequences. In Iowa, it is illegal to operate a vessel with a Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of .08 or higher, the same as it is to operate a vehicle. If found to be impaired, you will face the same consequences.
