The Iowa Board of Pharmacy has ordered the Carroll Walgreens to pay a fine for failing to maintain accountability of controlled substances within its facility. In February of 2018, Walgreens reported a loss of 880 tablets of tramadol, a schedule IV controlled substance, due to employee theft. A board compliance officer conducted a follow up audit of four randomly selected controlled substances several months later and also found a shortage of 509 tablets of alprazolam, a class IV controlled substance. A combined statement of charges, settlement agreement and final order were reached by the parties on July 9. In this document, Walgreens denies the board’s allegations, but acknowledges the charges, if proven in a contested hearing, would constitute grounds for disciplinary action. Walgreens was cited for failure to comply with regulations regarding accountability of controlled substances, warned that future violations may result in further action and ordered to pay a $1,500 fine to the State of Iowa.
