Jerry Stone, age 81, of Bayard passed away on Saturday, July 27, 2019 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Friday, August 2, 2019 at the Church of Christ in Bayard with Pastor Bob Rogers officiating. Organist for the service will be Alice Drake. Casket bearers will be Ryan Evans, Brandon Assman, Brian Stone, Spencer Stone, Zach Jurgens, Brad Assman, and Mike Evans. Honorary casket bearers will be Kori Assman, Abby Jurgens, Mandy Jurgens, Jessica Evans, Emma Jurgens, Brady Langgaard, Jami Jorgensen, Miranda Plowman, Justin Plowman and Anya Stone. Burial will be in Highland Township Cemetery with military honors by the Bayard American Legion and the Iowa National Guard.
Friends may call at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Coon Rapids from 5 – 7 P.M. on Thursday evening. The casket will be moved to the Bayard Church of Christ at 9:30 A.M. on Friday where visitation will resume until 10:15 A.M. Jerry was born on May 19, 1938 in Bayard and was the son of Carroll and Vera (Albright) Stone. He graduated from Bayard High School in 1956. Following high school he attended trade school in Omaha and was then drafted into the United States Army from 1961 – 1963. He was married to Carol Knudsen in 1964 and to this union three children were born: Janelle, Lisa, and Channing. Carol passed away in 1976. On April 18, 1987, Jerry married Joyce (Lewis) Jurgens at Living History Farms among family and friends. On this day he also gained three more thildren: Tammy, Tim, and Trisha. Jerry and Joyce enjoyed going to their grandchildren’s activities and traveling. Their most memorable trips were going to Alaska and Holland. Jerry was a jack of all trades having numerous jobs including trucking before he was legally able, working in an auto body shop in Coon Rapids, working for the Bayard Farmers Coop and the City of Bayard. Jerry enjoyed his hobbies of wood working and cooking. He made a cradle for the first grandchild in each family as well as baking wedding, graduation, and birthday cakes. Throughout his life, Jerry was a member of the Jaycees, Boy Scouts, and the Bayard Fire Department as well as many other numerous associations. Jerry was a member of the Bayard Church of Christ.
Jerry is survived by his wife Joyce of Bayard and children: Janelle (Tom) Langgaard of Guthrie Center, Tammy (Mike) Evans of Bayard, Lisa (Todd) Plowman of Adair, Tim Jurgens of Bayard, Channing (Erica) Stone of Bayard, Trisha (Brad) Assman of Rockwell City; fifteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his siblings: Kay (Dick) Brannan of Ankeny, Roger (Rita) Stone of Granger, Janet (Gene) Scheuermann of West Des Moines, Marilyn (Gary) Hunter of Winterset, Judy Goodwin of Coon Rapids, Dick (Val) Stone of Bayard, Patsy Kranzler of Columbus, NE, Jack (Jeannie) Stone of Bayard, and Donny (Shirley) Stone of Minburn, IA; many nieces and nephews and good friends.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents Carroll and Vera Stone; his first wife Carol; his mother-in-law Lessie Lewis, his brother-in-law Jim Goodwin; and a niece Stephanie Douglas.
