No Violent Crime And An Overall Decrease In Other Crimes In Carroll Based On FY End Report By Carroll PD

The Carroll Police Department has recently released their annual report for the 2018/19 Fiscal Year (FY). Chief, Brad Burke, says that even though there are a lot of news reports about crime in Carroll, the numbers are not showing an increase.

With the decreased ability for people to find assistance, many law enforcement agencies are dealing with problems related to mental health issues. Burke says they are no exception.

He points out they are seeing an increase in the hours spent on mental health issues. There is one new officer at the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy in Johnston, and the department is now back to full staff. They will be to full patrolling staff in January. Burke identifies what he saw as the biggest positive takeaway from the report.

He says there was one fatal accident that occurred with a motor vehicle in that year. The new investigative team has created a rise in the number of closed cases, which is a positive. These are either ending in a conviction or a passing of the information to the County Attorney for prosecution. There was an increase in one area; traffic accidents within the city limits.

Burke says his officers are issuing a greater number of citations for texting; not only because of the law change with stiffer penalties, but also because the officers are getting more comfortable with recognizing and responding to the violations. A link to the full report can be found below.
