The Storm Lake Police Department has announced their K-9, Ozzy, is the recipient of a bullet and stab protective vest, thanks to a charitable donation from Vested Interest in K-9s, Inc. Sharon M. Peters of Grosse Pointe Shires, Mich. sponsored the vest in honor of her father through the non-profit organization, and it included a special embroidered message, “In memory of Det. Lt. Richard J. Scott.” The cost of one donated vest is $950. Since its inception in 2009, Vested Interest in K-9s has provided 3,400 vests in 50 states through private and corporate donations at a value of $5.7 million. The program is open to dogs actively employed in the U.S. with law enforcement or related agencies who are certified and at least 20 months of age. New K-9 graduates and those with expired vests are eligible to participate.
