The Carroll County Board of Supervisors is expected to bring back a discussion on the possibility of the sale of the county farm, on North Mahogany Avenue, to help offset impact to the taxpayers with the approval of a more than $4.5 million radio communications upgrade. Supervisor, Dean Schettler, had not been present at the Oct. 14 meeting when the topic was initially evaluated and he was brought up to speed at this week’s meeting. Chair, Neil Bock, says they have about 2.97 percent interest on their bond. The return on renting out the land, however, has not been meeting that mark as of late. Bock says there was a general consensus that selling may be the best option.

Gene Meiners said he was approached by a resident and told to avoid a sealed bid sale. He would prefer an auction with a minimum set and Stephanie Hausman said she would like to see the stipulations include the right to refuse all offers. Initial estimates are that the roughly 110 acres could bring up to $1 million. Schettler asked if there was any information produced that would show the tax impact to residents if sold.

Schettler is not totally against selling the farm, he just wants to ensure they are doing it for the right reason. He also wanted to know if the property was situated for optimal return. Auditor, Kourtney Irlbeck, explained.

Gene Meiners would like to proceed, but do so with caution and get the best bang out of their buck in offsetting major expenses for the taxpayers. Schettler and Meiners were to discuss the zoning options with the City of Carroll and all supervisors were tasked with doing any additional research before the topic is broached again at their next meeting, Monday, Oct. 28 at 9 a.m. in the board room at the Carroll County Courthouse.
