Storm Lake Police Chief Will Take New Role With Sioux City Diocese In 2020

Bishop R. Walker Nickless says the newly named Director of Pastoral Planning for the Sioux City Diocese is a natural fit, in large part because of his organizational skills and an ability to “get things done” that was demonstrated in more than 40 years of work in law enforcement. On Tuesday, the diocese announced Storm Lake Public Safety Director and Chief of Police, Mark Prosser, would become acting director on Feb. 3, 2020. One other attribute was key to Prosser’s appointment as well. “Most importantly, he is a deacon of our diocese,” says Bishop Nickless. “He knows most of the priests and all of the deacons in our parishes. He has an easy accessibility to our parish communities and can help them in their planning.” Prosser’s new role will involve directing and leading diocesan-wide efforts to fully and consistently implement the goals of the Ministry 2025 Pastoral Plan. He will work with parishes, new parish groups, pastors and their committees “to bring the new organizational structure of the diocese together.” Prosser says this position has always been one of interest to him. “As a deacon and an active parish member, I have always enjoyed serving the church and working on behalf of the church and the faith. I am deeply honored to have been selected. I am looking forward to working with priests and laity across northwest Iowa.” Prosser was born and raised in East St. Louis, Ill. He holds a bachelor of science degree in police administration and has undertaken graduate studies in public administration and management. He served as Chief of Police in Storm Lake for 30 years and Public Safety Director for 19. His official last day with the department will be Dec. 31.
