A substantial donation to Stewart Memorial Community Hospital (SMCH) from a local family will help fund the establishment of a rehabilitation services center in Lake City. On Thursday, SMCH announced Nancy and Gus Macke, the owners of Macke Motors in Lake City, had donated a Greene County farm property to the hospital. Proceeds from the sale of the hospital will be used to build a new rehab center. Hospital leaders began planning a renovation and expansion to the Emergency and Outpatient Service departments in 2017, and for the Mackes, supporting this effort just made sense. Gus says, “It works on several levels: you stay viable to current customers, you appeal to people on the edge of your service area and you’re able to attract high quality medical professionals.” In honor of the generation donation, the new rehab center will be named after the philanthropic couple. When finished, the emergency department and helipad will be relocated adjacent to the patient wing to allow for more efficient and secure treatment and will several new private treatment rooms will be added to the ER. The considerable donation marks the beginning of the hospital’s “Putting People First” campaign to funding quality care in rural Iowa for generations to come. Individuals interested in supporting the campaign are asked to contact SMCH Foundation Director, Jesse Underwood, through the contact points included with this story on our website for more information.
