A Carroll native and Des Moines attorney, Matt McDermott, was one of 12 candidates to interview Tuesday for a judgeship on the Iowa Supreme Court. His name is now one of three that has been passed on to Gov. Kim Reynolds for review. On Thursday, the Judicial Nominating Commission selected McDermott, a Bettendorf district court judge, Joel Barrows, and Cedar Rapids attorney, Dana Oxley as finalists. Reynolds has 30 days to appoint one of these to fill the vacancy left with the death of Chief Justice Mark Cady on Nov. 15. McDermott graduated from Kuemper Catholic High School and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa and his law degree from the University of California Berkeley School of Law. He currently works with the firm of Belin McCormick in Des Moines and received the Iowa State Bar Association’s Young Lawyer Division Award of Merit in 2013.
