The application process is now open for the Specialty Crop Block Grant Program. Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, Mike Naig, says the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship grants must be used in support of projects to promote specialty crops grown in the state. “Iowa farmers grow diverse crops that can be found in stores and markets across the state. Supporting efforts that improve specialty crop production and expand demand will positively impact producers and consumers,” says Naig. “These grants allow organizations to highlight Iowa grown specialty crops in a unique way.” Funds will be targeted to those projects that enhance the competiveness and growth of the specialty crop industry. Eligible crops include fruits and vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits and horticulture and nursery crops, including floriculture. The applications will need to explain how projects improve specialty crop production through marketing and promotions, research and development, expanding availability and access to specialty crops and addressing local, regional and national challenges. All must have an educational component. Awards up to $24,000 for projects with a duration of up to three months will be presented.
