ESC School Board Continues To Work Out Details Of Transition From Four Campuses To Two

Last fall, the East Sac County School District (ESC) Board of Education approved a resolution that set in motion plans to close the elementary school in Wall Lake and middle school building in Sac City, and now officials are working on how they will move forward with the transition. Following their meeting last week, the board announced K-6 classes would move to a single building in Sac City with seventh through 12th-grade students in Lake View. According to Superintendent, Jeff Kruse, the board determined construction is necessary at both campuses to make this plan work.

If this construction goes as planned, the district will be operating just two buildings by the 2021-22 school year. However, Kruse says the board still needs to determine if they will keep the Sac City elementary year open for an additional year.

Kruse says keeping all four buildings open next year would strain the district’s finances and making the move before the new classrooms are finished would make finding classroom space for students difficult. Kruse says closing the Wall Lake building in May and keeping the Sac City elementary open for next year will help ease the transition.

The school board is expected to decide on an option at their next meeting Monday, Feb. 10 at 6 p.m. at the Sac City elementary building. Kruse notes the board still has many questions left to be answered, such as how student transportation will be handled during and after the switch, what will be done with the buildings no longer in use, staffing decisions and more.
