In just over three weeks, voters in the Audubon Community School District will be heading to the polls to decide the future of a proposed $7.5 million in improvements and repairs to the high school. Superintendent, Eric Trager, says the General Obligation bond up for question will provide funding to correct a wide range of issues at the building, the first being the heating and air conditioning system.
If approved, he says the remaining $4 million will be used to install additional safety measures and replace the high school’s aging infrastructure.
The estimated maximum increase to the district’s property tax levy is 73 cents per $1,000 of taxable valuation, or about $37 per year for 20 years on an average home in Audubon. Because it is a General Obligation bond referendum, a 60% supermajority is required for approval on March 3. Trager says they are ready to begin preparations for the project once the votes have been tallied.
Trager adds there are issues in the wrestling room and auditorium that simply cannot be put off any longer and will have to be addressed regardless of whether the referendum passes. There will be a single polling location, and that is in the Agri-Hall at the Audubon County Fairground from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, March 3.
