A Sioux City man accused of fleeing from Carroll County law enforcement at high speeds last summer made his initial appearance in District Court Tuesday. According to court records, 27-year-old Alex Zamorra Delashmutt was taken into custody by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office at the Cherokee County jail Monday. He is charged with driving while barred and eluding at speeds over 25 mph over the limit, aggravated misdemeanors, and possession of a controlled substance, a serious misdemeanor. The charges stem from an incident during the early morning hours of July 20. Authorities say Delashmutt sped away from an attempted traffic stop near Maple River at speeds of up to 110 mph and avoided arrest by fleeing into a cornfield on foot. A subsequent search of the abandoned 2008 GMC Acadia located a glass vial containing a white powder. Laboratory testing confirmed the substance was 0.37 grams of cocaine salts. Delashmutt was released on his own recognizance earlier this week after appearing before a magistrate. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Thursday, March 12.
