The Audubon City Council met earlier this week for a special session to discuss ideas and solutions to several ongoing topics within the community. The first item on Monday’s agenda was a proposed update to city code to allow ATVs and UTVs on city streets. Officials previously indicated they were planning to model their ordinance on the one used by the county. Clerk, Joe Foran, says the council decided during the work session to go this route and identified some minor changes that will be necessary.
If approved, the ordinance requires operators to possess a valid driver’s license. ATVs and UTVs must be registered and insured and have all the required lights equipped. The first reading is expected to be presented during the council’s March meeting. Foran says they also discussed applying to the Homes for Iowa program to bring a prisoner-built house from the Newton Correctional Facility to Audubon.
The first structure constructed by Homes for Iowa was delivered to Jefferson Wednesday, and Audubon officials are hoping to be the recipients of at least one of the houses currently under construction. The final topic of the work session also dealt with residential housing. The council is preparing application materials for a Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) to rehabilitate eight owner-occupied homes on the Highway 71 corridor.
The council did not take any formal action on these items during the work session, but they will be brought back at their next meeting, which is scheduled for Monday, March 9 at 5:30 p.m. at Audubon City Hall.
