The Sac City Council is heading back to the drawing board for planned improvements to storm sewers in town after bids came in well above estimates. Officials reviewed two bids at their meeting Tuesday night, one from King Construction for nearly $220,000 and another from Reding’s Gravel and Excavating for just under $192,000. Original estimates from engineers suggested the upgrades to infrastructure on 12th Street would cost only $115,000. The city council voted unanimously to reject the bids. However, Administrator, Jamie Lawrence, says that is not the end of the project. The council has directed him to investigate potentially combining the storm sewer improvements with a sanitary sewer project slated for the spring of 2021. According to Lawrence, that $2.4 million project is partially funded by low-interest loans from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and will need to be approved by the agency before they can move forward with potentially combining the two.
