Many questions remain as to how area schools will respond to Gov. Kim Reynold’s recommendation on Sunday evening that Iowa schools close for four weeks to reduce the potential spread of the novel coronavirus. As of Monday, all schools in the region have cancelled classes and activities until at least the second week of April. Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Superintendent, Dr. Casey Berlau, says school officials are working as quickly as possible to work through the specifics of a month-long closure.
According to Berlau, the district’s four main attendance centers will be essentially empty for the next four weeks.
He adds students and staff will be able to return to the buildings from 8:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. Tuesday to pick up personal belongings, medications or other essential items that may have been left at school. Berlau says it is unclear if missed instructional time will be added back to their calendar and how that would be handled if required.
Berlau says the next month will be difficult for everybody and offers some tips for students and families.
Each school is making similar preparations for their month-long closures, but the specifics of each vary from district to district. Links to our area schools’ websites and social media pages can be found included with this story online.
