Manhole Cover Shot Into Air From Explosion At Carroll Clothing Store Wednesday Morning

The Carroll Fire Department and crews from MidAmerican Energy and Alliant Energy were called to the scene of a reported explosion at Wilkie Clothiers in Carroll at about 7:02 a.m. Wednesday morning. Fire Chief, Greg Schreck, reports that upon arrival at 125 W. 5th Street, firefighters found the rear windows of the clothing store had been blown outward, but there was no sign of fire. He says a steel manhole cover at the rear of the property was blown so far into the air and with such force that it had stuck vertically into the ground with nearly half of its diameter buried. Workers with Alliant Energy did a sweep of nearby buildings for signs of accumulated natural gas with no detectable levels found. Crews from both have remained on scene throughout the morning to monitor the situation and determine a cause. Schreck adds that there was surprisingly little damage done to the clothing store as a result of this explosion.
