Enforcement Deadline For REAL IDs Moved To Oct. 1, 2021

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security has pushed the REAL ID enforcement deadline back a year. According to Acting Secretary, Chad Wolf, the circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and national emergency declaration required the change. Wolf says, “The Department of Homeland Security, as directed by President Donald J. Trump, is extending the REAL ID enforcement deadline beyond the current October 1, 2020 deadline. I have determined that states require a twelve-month delay and that the new deadline for REAL ID enforcement is October 1, 2021.” REAL ID’s are government-issued identification cards, such as driver’s licenses, that will be required to access federal facilities or board regulated commercial aircraft after the new deadline has passed.
