Carroll Native And Kuemper Grad, Matthew McDermott, Appointed To Iowa Supreme Court

Gov. Kim Reynolds announced Friday the appointment of a Carroll native, Matthew McDermott to the Iowa Supreme Court. McDermott, of West Des Moines, currently practices law with Belin McCormick, P.C. in Des Moines and serves as President of the Board of Directors for Iowa Legal Aid. Prior to earning his bachelor’s degree from the University of Iowa and law degree from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law, McDermott attended Kuemper Catholic High School. Reynolds says, “Matt is a talented, smart, and astute lawyer with deep Iowa roots. His commitment to the rule of law and passion for service will now benefit all Iowans as he joins the Iowa Supreme Court.” In 2013, he was presented the Iowa State Bar Association’s Young Lawyer Division Award of Merit. “I’m deeply honored by this appointment, and grateful for the confidence the Governor has shown in me,” says McDermott. “I will work every day to be a faithful servant of the Constitution and the laws of this great state, and to carry out the oath to ‘administer justice according to the law, equally’ to everyone.” He fills the vacancy left by the retirement of Justice David Wiggins.
