Officials at the East Sac County (ESC) Community School District have tentatively scheduled graduation for the class of 2020 to take place on Sunday, July 26. According to High School Principal, Kevin Litterer, they had been hoping to keep their original May 17 date, but guidance from the Iowa Department of Public Health and Department of Education indicated that is no longer an option. He says they were preparing for this possibility and had been working with senior class leaders on a solution.
While a potential date has been set, Litterer says the specifics of commencement are still being developed.
Some potential options include hosting the event in the usual manner with limitations on guests or doing it in the football stadium to provide more room for physical distancing. Regardless of how graduation looks, Litterer says their goal is to make it memorable for their seniors.
He adds they continue to prepare for the possibility an in-person graduation would not be possible and are exploring how a virtual graduation would work. Litterer says they are very fortunate to have a great team of administrators, teachers, students and parents working on the issue, and the process has been far easier with the support of everybody in the district.
