With many pork processing plants in Iowa suspending operations or cutting back production due to the potential for COVID-19 outbreaks at their facilities, the state’s pork producers are being forced to consider euthanizing hogs that are unable to be moved to market. Very few sites have the equipment or personnel to properly dispose of large volumes of animal tissue, and Iowa State University (ISU) Extension and Outreach has organized a webinar for producers to better understand their options moving forward. The Wednesday, April 29 webinar begins at 8 a.m. and features Mark Hutchinson from the University of Maine, Gary Flory with the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality and Craig Williams from Penn State. Topics of discussion include environmentally sound disposal, compost methods, above ground burial, carbon feedstocks, windrow construction and management and more. The presentation is free thanks to support from the Iowa Pork Producers Association; however, participants must preregister using the link included below.
