Nominations for Drake University’s Robert D. and Billie Ray Center Character Awards are open until May 3. Since 2005, more than 100 individual Iowans have been recognized for displaying the Six Pillars of Character. These include: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and good citizenship. Nominations can be for people of several different age categories or occupations as well as business organizations, communities, sports teams and schools. Local winners include Rose Eischeid in 2014 as Citizen of Character while she was a student at Carroll High School, Harlan High School as a School of Character in 2011, Michaela Ahrenholtz as Citizen of Character in 2010 when she was a sixth-grader at the Denison Middle School and the Denison Elementary School as a School of Character in 2008. The 300-word nomination will start with an introduction of the nominee and a description of how they have impacted the life of others and then include details on how they demonstrate the Six Pillars of Character.
