Wednesday was National Nurses Day, and St. Anthony Regional Hospital was pleased to be able to announce that one of their own was selected for a 100 Great Iowa Nurses honor. After a 38-year nursing career that encompassed service in acute medical-surgical, nursing rehabilitation and nursing instruction, Marcia Schaefer retired in January from her position as director with St. Anthony Home Health, Hospice and Public Health. Schaefer, who has been with that department since 2011, has not relinquished her nursing role completely as she is still working there part-time. “Through her leadership of Home Health, Hospice and Public Health, Marcia led remarkable improvement in the health of Carroll County as a whole,” says Karen Timm, Vice-President of Patient Services. “She maintained a high level of nursing professionalism, dedication to patients and she led her team and others by example.” During her tenure, the department received numerous awards for patient satisfaction and quality. They have been awarded many Home Care Elite and CMS patient satisfaction honors and they consistently rate in the top 25 percent in Iowa for both health outcomes and health factors. “This is quite an honor, given the number of exceptional nurses I know and work with,” Schaefer says. “Especially in the environment we are in today, you see the best everyone has to give and I am humbled to be a part of the team.” Schaefer was selected as one of 100 Great Nurses of Iowa from hundreds of nominations. The selection criteria is based on the individual’s concern for humanity, contribution to the profession and their leadership and mentoring abilities. Schaefer is the 10th St. Anthony nurse to receive this award. A full listing of previous winners can be found below.
