CCSD Board Of Education To Fine-Tune Plans For End Of School Year At Monday’s Meeting

The May meeting of the Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education is scheduled for next week, and school officials will continue their practice of participating remotely. According to Superintendent, Dr. Casey Berlau, the board will hear reports from the district’s administrators after they have finished with the public forum. He says much of their focus will be on closing out the 2019-20 school year.

Districts’ Return to Learn plans are due back to the Iowa Department of Education by July 1. Once completed, these plans will serve as the district’s playbook for the start of the 2020-21 school year. As it is unclear what that may look like, administrators are preparing several different scenarios to ensure education will continue in some form after the summer break. School officials indicated at their April meeting they were hoping to hold graduation next Sunday, May 24. Unfortunately, Berlau says they have been forced to deviate from their original plan.

The district will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and will adjust as needed as we get nearer to those dates. While school buildings have been essentially vacant for more than two months, the summer break has not technically started. June and July are when many of the districts more substantial projects are completed, but Berlau says they likely will not complete as much as they would prefer due to the uncertainty surrounding school funding created by the pandemic.

The Monday, May 18 meeting begins at 5 p.m. and will be available through Zoom and Facebook Live. Details on how to attend and a link to the full agenda can be found included with this story on our website. Individuals who wish to participate in the public forum are asked to send comments by email to gbengtson@carrolltigers.org or cberlau@carrolltigers.org by 4 p.m. on Monday.
