Sixteen area high school students have been selected for the 2020 Governor’s Scholar Program. These students are being recognized as the highest academic achievers in their schools and will be presented plaques and certificates by the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) and the Iowa Farm Bureau. This year’s in-person ceremony was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “Iowa has a proud history of educational excellence, and this year’s honorees are a product of that tradition,” Reynolds says in a letter to the students. “You are a role model for your community and all students across the state. In these unprecedented times, it is your generation who will lead us into new opportunities in science, technology, agriculture, education and business in the coming years.” In addition to being recognized for their academic excellence, more than 99 percent of this year’s honorees participate in school activities and more than 60 percent plan to pursue a post-secondary education in Iowa. “The principles learned through academic success, like those learned from participation in school activities, help to develop outstanding young leaders,” says IHSAA executive director, Tom Keating. The 64 largest schools in the state were invited to submit the names of two seniors while the other schools were to select one. A full listing of area honorees can be found below.
