CCSD Graduation Postponed To June

The Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education brought back the graduation discussion at Monday night’s meeting. Last month, the board outlined a modified commencement plan for graduating seniors on Sunday, May 24. But after consulting with local health officials, they determined a date change was necessary. Superintendent, Dr. Casey Berlau, says graduation is now slated for the last weekend in June at the Carroll Athletic Field.

He adds there will be additional restrictions placed on the event.

May 22 will be the final day voluntary enrichment opportunities will be offered to students, and that will mark the end of the unusual spring semester. With the school year essentially finished, Berlau says the administrative team is turning most its attention to the district’s Return to Learn plan, which must be submitted to the Iowa Department of Education by July 1. After consulting with Ar-We-Va and Kuemper Catholic, Berlau says there will be no changes to the start date for the 2020-21 school year.

The district is working to put together more than a half-dozen committees to address transportation, curriculum and other topics that will need to be addressed as part of Return to Learn. Berlau says they are preparing three different scenarios for what education might look like in August.

According to Berlau, more than 14,000 grab-and-go meals were distributed in April alone. In normal years, the end of school would mark the beginning of the summer lunch program. However, the state has extended the grab-and-go method through August, and CCSD will continue to provide meals in this manner while class is out of session for the season.
