Greene County Authorities Respond To Two Accidents Over The Weekend

The Greene County Sheriff’s Office responded to two accidents over the weekend. The first call came in Friday at approximately 5:35 p.m. and a deputy was dispatched to U.S. Highway 30 and 16th Street North in Grand Junction. Fifty-seven-year-old Juan Joel Garza of Goodell was westbound in a 2002 Toyota Sienna, but preparing to make a southbound turn off of Highway 30 onto 16th Street. He was struck by a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by 27-year-old Mathu Franklin Meiners of Alta, who was traveling eastbound on Highway 30. The impact forced both vehicles into the southeast ditch. Two occupants of the Garza vehicle were transported by Greene County Emergency Medical Services to the Greene County Medical Center for treatment of suspected minor injuries. Garza told authorities the sun created a glare and obstructed his view of the oncoming truck. The Meiners’ Silverado suffered an estimated $8,000 in damage and the Sienna an estimated $2,500 in damages. Garza was cited for failure to yield upon a left turn. A deputy responded to a car/deer accident on Sunday night, in the 1600 block of 235th Street east of Jefferson at approximately 9:17 p.m. Thirty-seven-year-old Tashina Taylor of Jefferson was eastbound in a 2014 Buick LaCrosse when a deer entered the roadway from the south ditch. Taylor was unable to stop and struck the deer, sustaining only minor injuries to herself and a passenger. There was an estimated $15,000 in damage to the vehicle.
