Ida Grove Man Airlifted After Jeep/Semi Accident Friday Afternoon

An Ida Grove man was airlifted for treatment of serious injuries following an accident in Buena Vista County on Friday afternoon. The Iowa State Patrol responded to the scene on U.S. Highway 3 and County Road M27, northeast of Aurelia, at approximately 1:15 p.m. Twenty-nine-year-old Fernando Alvarez Arellano was northbound on M27 in a 2011 Jeep Wrangler. Eighty-three-year-old Richard Smith of Searsboro was eastbound on Highway 3 in a 2007 Freightliner semi-tractor trailer. Alvarez Arellano reportedly pulled out from the stop sign at the intersection and in front of the semi, which struck the driver’s side of the Jeep. The impact caused the Jeep to end up in a corn field on the north side of Highway 3 and the semi jackknifed, coming to rest in the north ditch. There is no report of Smith being injured. The Buena Vista County Sheriff’s Office and Aurelia Police and Fire Departments assisted at the scene.
