The Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education has decided against raising student meal prices at the start of the 2020-21 school year. The issue was discussed during the board’s June 16 meeting. Director of Business Affairs, Gary Bengtson, recommended a freeze on pricing based on the current balance in their nutrition fund.
Bengtson adds this fund is always difficult to predict, but it will be even tougher come next year due to the uncertainty surrounding school operations come August. The current plan has lunch prices at $2.60 and breakfast is $1.60 per day for kindergarten through fourth-grade students. At the middle school, lunch will cost $2.70 while breakfast remains at $1.60. For high schoolers, lunch is $2.80 and breakfast is $1.65. Bengtson does not believe they will need a mid-year price increase, but he does not rule out the possibility of a price change.
Board member, Duane Horsley, asked about the district’s grab-and-go meals while school was out of session during the pandemic and what effect it had on the nutrition fund. Bengtson says money for that program came from federal funding and has not negatively impacted the district’s budget.
CCSD’s summer lunch program is scheduled to run through the end of July. The board of education then unanimously approved a motion freezing lunch prices for the 2020-21 school year.
