CCSD Board Of Education Approves Additional Professional Development Days To Help Teachers Prepare For Challenges In August

The Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education passed a resulution during a special meeting Friday to provide two additional professional development days at the beginning of the 2020-21 school year. Superintendent, Dr. Casey Berlau, says they heard from staff members at every grade level requesting extra training to prepare for what will likely be an unusual return to classes in August.

Following the teachers’ request, he recommended the board schedule additional professional development days on Aug. 17 and Aug. 18 before classes resume Aug. 25. Berlau says each extra day costs the district tens of thousands of dollars, but they have been able to identify several funding sources.

The coronavirus pandemic forced schools to adjust the way they handled their day-to-day teaching and activities. CCSD closed out the 2020 school year with voluntary learning opportunities, but Berlau says all learning will be mandatory this coming year. Teachers will need to be ready to adapt to changing circumstances.

The board voted unanimously to approve the additional professional development days at an estimated cost of $82,000. The district’s current Return to Learn plan, which is to be turned in to the state by July 1, can be found included below. However, school officials stress the plan is subject to change prior to or after classes begin.
