The Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education has decided to hold off on hiring a new medical assistant until they have more information about the start of the 2020-21 school year. During their June 16 meeting, the school board discussed the creation of a new position to help manage health concerns during the pandemic, but Superintendent, Dr. Casey Berlau, says recent communication from the Iowa Department of Education indicates this hire may no longer be necessary. The new guidelines from the state go into effect July 1. Berlau explains what these recommendations entail.
Berlau adds these issues would have likely been overseen by the district’s nurses, but they do not have one at each building, necessitating the health assistant position. The board voted at a special meeting Friday to table the issue. However, they are still interested in potentially adding another medical professional to the staff. Discussion on the topic is expected to return at their July 20 meeting. School officials continue to prepare for the start of classes in August amid an ever-changing environment.
