The Audubon City Council has ordered the creation of several committees to explore the feasibility of renovations and improvements to three of the community’s public buildings. According to Clerk, Joe Foran, the groups have been tasked with a review of potential projects at city hall, the community pool and the Audubon fire station.
The building that currently houses city hall was constructed in 1924 and served a variety of purposes until the city moved their offices there around 65 years ago. According to Foran, the aging infrastructure cannot sustain the demands of a 21st-century local government.
Foran adds the Audubon community pool was built just under 30 year ago. He says pools generally have a 25-year lifespan and it is time for the council to bring the facility in line with what other towns in the area have to offer.
He says the fire station has also outgrown its usefulness. Fire trucks have grown in size considerably from the time the station was originally built, and newer vehicles barely fit inside the existing station. The Audubon Firefighters Association does own a property that is being considered for a new station. However, Foran says they have run into some issues at that site.
He says the committees will be looking at a variety of different options for each project and will report their initial findings to the council in the next several weeks. A work session is to be scheduled before their next meeting, and the council will discuss these projects more in-depth when they convene on Aug. 10.
