An attempt to defraud an insurance carrier has netted three years of probation for a Storm Lake man in a deferred judgment from the Buena Vista County District Court last week. The charges of submitting a fraudulent claim to an insurer, a class D felony, stemmed from an investigation opened in June of 2019. It was determined that 25-year-old Nathan Tun had conspired with two other individuals to hide his vehicle in Texas or Mexico and then report it stolen. He collected more than $17,000 from the insurance carrier in this scheme. “Insurance fraud is not a victimless crime,” Iowa Insurance Commissioner, Doug Ommen, said in a news release. “We all pay for insurance fraud in the form of higher insurance costs. I appreciate the hard work of our Fraud Bureau and all who participated in the prosecution of this case so Mr. Tun was held accountable for his actions.” In addition to probation, Tun was ordered to pay more than $17,800 in penalties and restitution.
