Carroll City Apartments Coming Down In A Unique Way

Those driving along North Main Street in Carroll will see something of a unique site as demolition of the former City Apartments continues. The contractor, Templeton Family Farms, has cut away a roof section and is currently demolishing the center of the building. City Manager, Mike Pogge-Weaver, says the contractor is conducting the work in this manner as a means to protect the adjacent structures. Once the center is completely removed, they will be able to direct the demolition of the outer portions to that empty central spot. According to past editions of the Carroll Sentinel and a report put together by the City of Carroll on the structure, the City Apartments began as a hotel, constructed in 1886. The 15-room establishment was deemed the premiere hotel of the community. In 1890,a third floor was added, increasing the number of rooms to between 30 and 40. It was near the end of that century that the building was transformed into apartments.
